I recently made Cars cupcakes for my little guy for his Cars themed birthday party. He’s become obsessed with the movie and LOVES Lightening McQueen. When we’re on the road, he yells out “Lightening McQueen” whenever he sees a red car or “Cruz Ramirez” whenever he sees a yellow car.
When I was a child, I used to love playing with Play Doh or modelling clay. The best part about making fondant cupcake toppers is that it brings me back to those times. It brings out the child in me and I honestly think I have more fun creating the toppers than the children have eating the cupcakes!
After colouring white fondant with food coloring gels and rolling out the fondant with a fondant roller, I used a cookie cutter to cut the toppers. The eyes were cut using different sizes of piping tips. The trick to getting the fondant to release from the piping tips is to dip the tips in cornstarch each time before cutting. The remaining pieces were either hand rolled or cut using a knife or fondant cutter. Wilton has a great 10 piece fondant and gumpaste toolkit that makes it easy to cut and manipulate the fondant into different shapes.
If you end up trying these out, I hope you have as much as fun as I did!
